A few weeks ago we told you all about our favourite running clothes that will help you minimise your impact on the planet, people, and animals when running. And today, we’re looking at sustainable running shoes more specifically.

Our favourite running shoes from “Good” and “Great” rated brands

Choosing the right running shoes is super important. Good running shoes will help soften the impact of your jog, but most importantly, will prevent injuries.

But did you know regular running shoes can have a pretty negative impact on the environment? A pair of synthetic running shoes, for example, is said to generate 30lbs of emissions, equivalent to leaving a 100-watt bulb burning for a week!

And don’t get us started on the impact of traditional running shoes on workers: Nike (It’s A Start) is still not paying a living wage, nor is New Balance (Not Good Enough), Mizuno’s (Not Good Enough) supply chain is not certified by labour standards and Saucony (Not Good Enough) got the lowest labour rating of ‘Very Poor’ for its lack of transparency.

Luckily an increasing number of brands are beginning to create more environmentally-friendly and ethical running shoes, incorporating sustainable materials and ensuring workers’ safety, health, and labour rights!

Before we dive in, here are a few things you should remember when buying your next pair of running shoes:

  • Get your foot properly measured: your shoes shouldn’t be too tight, or too large. Don’t be afraid to increase your shoe size! (Funny story: I usually buy EU size 39 shoes, but my running shoes are an EU size 42!)
  • Buy shoes adapted to your running level and routine: don’t buy trail shoes if you’re going on 20 minutes jogs in the city.
  • Know your gait and running style: according to HuffPost, gaits typically fall into three standard types—neutral, overpronated, or underpronated—and will help you determine which shoe to go for.
  • Take time adjusting to your new shoe: don’t go on your first 10km with that brand new pair you’ve never worn before. Runners World recommends alternating between your old and your new pair to lower the risk of injury and let your body and feet adapt.

So, without further ado, here are our 3 favourite sustainable running shoes! Ready, set, GO!
